 The MIS Ph.D. at WSU

The MIS doctoral program at Washington State University is one of the largest and most comprehensive behavioral research-focused MIS programs in the world. The number and quality of doctoral-level courses rivals those of the best programs in the country. Our first cohort of Ph.D. students graduated in 2002. Since then, we have been successful in accomplishing our mission of placing our doctoral students in nationally and internationally recognized academic institutions. Our graduates have received offers from some of the nation’s top business schools, including Texas A&M; University of Virginia; Bentley College; SUNY Albany; University of Nevada, Las Vegas; and the College of William & Mary.

Our doctoral program is a full-time program located in Pullman, Wash. The WSU MIS Ph.D. program is designed to prepare doctoral students to be world-class scholars, with placement among the international community’s best research universities. The program usually takes four years to complete depending on your previous course work. Most doctoral students are offered a paid assistantship that includes a competitive stipend and a tuition waiver. Additional funding may be available for summer.

The department has 12 tenure-track faculty members who provide a wealth of resources and mentorship for Ph.D. students as they become successful scholars. The department’s faculty engages in research on a broad range of behavioral IT-related topics, and regularly publishes their research in the leading journals of the field such as Management Information Systems Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Management Science, Decision Sciences, Journal of Management Information Systems, Journal of the Association of Information Systems, among others. Further, a number of our faculty members also serve on the editorial boards of the top journals.

The department organizes weekly research colloquiums, where renowned IS faculty from around the world are invited as guest speakers/presenters. These research colloquiums provide Ph.D. students the opportunity to interact extensively with renowned faculty within the MIS discipline, and prepare them to present their research at international conferences. The department was also honored with the rare distinction of hosting the premier IS academic conference (ICIS) in 2003.

Why should you apply?
Pursue a Ph.D. in MIS if you have a passion to do world-class MIS research and to be an MIS professor at a top university. The doctoral education process is very challenging, but it is also enjoyable if you have an interest in intellectual pursuits, specifically exploring the interaction among emerging technologies and human behavior in an organizational context and writing about and presenting your findings in scholarly forums.
