The MIS Student Experience and Opportunities

In addition to their experiences in the classroom, MIS students also have access to a variety of opportunities designed to enhance their career possibilities. These opportunities include events such as our Seattle Alumni Event held at Safeco field, membership and leadership opportunities in our MIS professional student organization Mu Iota Sigma, as well as involvement in our prestigious MIS fellowship program.

Mu Iota Sigma (ΜΙΣ) is a student-run organization at Washington State University established in 2004 to create an environment in which students can expand their knowledge and awareness of the MIS field. As one of the first such organizations formed in the nation, Mu Iota Sigma student members have the opportunity to build professional relationships with other students, MIS faculty, and corporate contacts. Mu Iota Sigma hosts corporate guest speakers and organizes tours of high tech companies in the Seattle region.

Student Alumni Event at Safeco Field: Mu Iota Sigma is also cosponsor of our annual Student Alumni Event at Safeco Field in Seattle. During the day's activities, WSU MIS students get a chance to tour high-tech companies (such as Accenture, Boeing, Microsoft, Expedia.com, Corbis, and Safeco), then professionally network with corporate representatives at a Seattle Mariners game. Last year, total participation in the Alumni Event included nearly 50 students and 50 corporate representatives.

In addition to Mu Iota Sigma, high-performing MIS students can also apply to be part of the prestigious MIS Fellowship Program. Awarded each semester to only a handful of truly outstanding MIS students, the MIS fellowship program is a competitive on-campus internship for one of the leading MIS programs in the country. The MIS faculty select the best and brightest among undergraduate MIS students to serve as MIS fellows. As a fellow you work with faculty and hands-on, real-world business applications and research projects. MIS fellows have recently developed interactive websites and web-based applications to support faculty research, assisted with technology usability studies, and created an interactive whiteboard in the Seattle Seahawk playbook.

Finally, in association with our introductory class in information systems (MIS 250), the best students from nearly 500 enrolled students are selected as part of the MIS 250 Top 20 Student list. These students, even before they have elected to major in MIS, are eligible to attend MIS events such as the Student Alumni Event at Safeco Field in Seattle.
