Welcome to the School of Hospitality Business Management 75th Anniversary Web Site

Director's Message

Dear SHBM alumni and friends,

As Director for the past 23 years and a faculty member since 1975, it is an honor for me to be in the position as the School of Hospitality Business Management celebrates its 75th Anniversary in 2007. I have had the privilege of having many graduates as students or meeting other alumni at various functions and university events.

The School was established in 1932 and is one of the oldest and most respected in the United States. Our reputation is directly attributable to the success of our many graduates, which is a testament to the quality of education provided by Washington State University and the special experience enjoyed by students during their years on campus. In addition, the School has benefited from strong leadership provided by directors as well as faculty members. These individuals contributed significantly to the growth and success of hospitality education both domestically and internationally while bringing prominence and recognition to the institution and the academic program.

Over the past 75 years the School has grown in size and enrollment. Today, there are 425 students taking classes with 185 officially certified in the major. There are 12 faculty and staff members. The School operates a very successful Atrium Café in Todd Hall and generates significant revenue from catering events. The two student clubs, Sigma Iota Hospitality Club and the student chapter of the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH) are among the most active student groups in the College. In addition, the School has a Student Ambassador Program totaling 15 students who promote the School both on and off campus.

While we no longer offer a degree in Switzerland in cooperation with our partner school, University Center Cesar Ritz, we have expanded the semester abroad program to encompass College of Business students in all majors. There are currently 30 students studying in Switzerland this semester of which 12 are SHBM majors. Four years ago we established with Apicius-The Culinary Institute of Florence a unique Summer Education Abroad Program for eight weeks. This program involves instruction, in food, wine, language and culture and an internship program for four weeks. A total of 32 students will participate in the Florence Program this summer including students from James Madison University and the University of San Francisco.

2007 will be an exciting year as we celebrate 75 years of excellence and the accomplishments of our graduates and partners. Thank you to students, alumni, partner institutions, corporate partners, and faculty who have helped to shape the program over the years. It is my hope that you will share in our celebration by attending a 75th anniversary event and reconnecting with the School and your fellow alumni. I look forward to seeing many of you over the course of the year.

Best regards,

Terry Umbreit
